En route with Autophoto, the new exhibition at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art
Bringing together nearly 500 works by 100 historical and contemporary photographers from all over the world, the Autophoto exhibition reveals how, from the time of its invention to the present day, the automobile has inspired and influenced photographic artists and their concepts of aesthetics.
Reflections in rear-view mirrors, scenes framed by windscreens, and winding roads invite us to look differently at the world, and the photographs on display show how this landmark invention has changed our environment and our everyday life.
Featuring the works of Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Robert Doisneau, Martin Parr, Lee Friedlander, Yasuhiro Ishimoto and many more masters of iconic imagery, as well as models made especially by the artist Alain Bublex to provide a fresh perspective on the history of automobile design, the exhibition casts new light on our relationship with these objects of desire. Fasten your seatbelts!
