Kupka, an explosion of colours at the Grand Palais to celebrate spring
Spring is in the city, and with it the bright colours and bold shapes created by the Czech painter and graphic artist František Kupka, who illuminates the Grand Palais for the entire season and into summer. Although little-known to the French public, this major figure of non-figurative art and pioneer of abstraction is now honoured with a major exhibition that allows the visitor to discover the artistic path of this lifelong innovator, from his first pencil strokes as a newspaper and magazine illustrator and satirist to his rejection of conventional representation and embrace of new horizons. Distinguished by an aesthetic of solid colours, his works express themselves by their vitality of line and hue, energy and radiance. Just before the vernissage, the Grand Palais invited the Parisian illustrator Soledad to view the exhibition, and the drawings this inspired can be found on the museum’s Instagram account @ le_grand_palais.
