Tintoretto; Birth of a Genius, at the Luxembourg Museum
The Luxembourg Museum opens the season with an exhibition event dedicated to the birth of a genius, Jacopo Robusti, the 16th century artist better known by the name Tintoretto.
The 500th anniversary of the birth of one of the most fascinating painters of the Venetian Renaissance offers the perfect opportunity for an exhibition focussing on a thematic journey through the first fifteen years of his career, a critical period for our understanding of how he developed his craft and vision.
The works collected here reflect the diversity of Tintoretto's work, the richness of his visual and intellectual concepts, and his willingness to stimulate the eye and the spirit with his boldness. His story is indeed inspiring, detailing as it does the social and professional rise of the son of a dyer, who went on to make his mark on society and the Renaissance, yet never forgot his humble origins; the name Tintoretto literally means ‘the little dyer’.
