Walker Evans, the first major retrospective of the American photographer at the Pompidou Centre
His ‘documentary’ style and his insightful images of America in crisis during the 1930s influenced generations of photographers and artists. This first great retrospective of the American photographer Walker Evans presented by the Pompidou Centre highlights his fascination with the roadside, storefronts, signs, typography and faces he saw around him. This attention to the details of everyday life, urban banality and the common man made a major contribution to defining American culture in the 20th century. From the first photographs in the late 1920s to the Polaroids of the 1970s, some three hundred vintage prints in all are assembled, along with curiosities and artefacts from Evans’ own beloved collection of Americana.
